White House adviser Hassett hails lower-than-expected inflation data

White House adviser Hassett hails lower-than-expected inflation data 150 150 admin

WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) – White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett welcomed the consumer price index report on Thursday, saying the U.S. economy was showing high growth and lower inflation.

“I’m not saying we’re going to declare victory yet on the price problem, but this is just an astonishingly good CPI report,” he said in an interview with Fox Business Network.

Hassett said wages were growing faster than prices, American taxpayers would see big tax refunds next year and the government would help bring mortgage rates down.

“There’s lots of room for the Fed to cut rates,” he said.

A favorite to replace Jerome Powell as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve, Hassett also said the U.S. central bank should be more transparent in the future.

“I think that the Fed needs to be 100% more transparent than it’s been … whoever’s at the Fed needs to, like, just put all their cards on the table so we can understand what’s really going on at that institution.”

In an prime-time address to the nation on Wednesday, President Donald Trump pledged economic conditions would improve in the coming year, citing his tax policies, tariffs and plans to replace Powell.

Trump was expected to announce his choice to succeed Powell by early next year.

Venezuela authorizes two unsanctioned loaded oil supertankers to depart, sources say

Venezuela authorizes two unsanctioned loaded oil supertankers to depart, sources say 150 150 admin

Dec 18 (Reuters) – Venezuela authorized on Thursday two very large crude carriers (VLCC) to set sail for China, according to two sources familiar with Venezuela’s oil export operations, which would be only the second and third supertankers to depart since the U.S. seized a ship carrying Venezuelan oil last week.

The tankers are not on the U.S. sanctions list. The United States has said it would not allow any sanctioned vessels to leave Venezuelan waters. The tankers are each carrying around 1.9 million barrels of Venezuelan Merey heavy crude, according to internal documents from state company PDVSA.

The ships were planning to navigate with their tracking transponder switched off, one of the sources said.

Searches under way in new corruption probe involving French Minister Dati

Searches under way in new corruption probe involving French Minister Dati 150 150 admin

By Dominique Vidalon

PARIS, Dec 18 (Reuters) – French authorities carried out searches at the Culture Ministry, private homes and the office of the mayor of the 7th district of Paris on Thursday as part of a corruption probe involving Culture Minister Rachida Dati in connection with her years as a European Parliament member, the Financial Prosecutor said.

The searches are part of an investigation two French judges opened in October into possible “active and passive corruption, influence peddling, embezzlement of public funds, concealment and laundering in connection with Ms Rachida Dati’s mandate as a Member of the European Parliament,” the statement added.

Neither Dati, seen as a leading candidate to become Mayor of Paris in 2026, nor her lawyers could be reached for comment.

According to French media, the searches are intended in particular to determine whether Dati was paid by then-French energy company GDF Suez in 2010 and 2011 while she was a member of the European Parliament. She has denied this.

In a separate case, French judges in July ordered that Dati and former automobile executive Carlos Ghosn stand trial for alleged corruption and abuse of power in a case focusing on consulting fees, a judicial source said.

Dati has denied irregularities in the fees she received during that time, and Ghosn, who fled Japan in late 2019 aboard a private jet to Lebanon, has denied allegations of misconduct against him.

White South Africans could get Trump biography for kids in refugee welcome packet

White South Africans could get Trump biography for kids in refugee welcome packet 150 150 admin

By Ted Hesson

WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) – White South Africans coming to the U.S. as refugees could get a biography of President Donald Trump for children as part of a welcome packet proposed last week by an administration official, emails reviewed by Reuters showed.

The book – “Donald Trump Biography for Kids: An Inspirational Story of One of America’s Most Famous Presidents” – was suggested by Fred Cooper, a Trump appointee serving as deputy assistant secretary in a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to a December 8 internal email reviewed by Reuters.

The 89-page biography, designed for children ages 8 to 12, portrays the Republican president as an inspirational figure whose life “is a masterclass in determination, resilience, confidence, and dreaming big.”

Cooper also suggested the welcome packet include a biography of Andrew Jackson, the seventh U.S. president. Trump has praised Jackson, a fellow populist, although Jackson has faced historical criticism for owning slaves and driving Native Americans from their lands.

“I imagine these books wouldn’t be an issue?” Cooper said in the email, linking to the Trump and Jackson biographies. The email did not say what the U.S. government might pay for the biographies.

HHS and Cooper did not respond to requests for comment.

The planned welcome packet, if finalized, would support Trump’s effort to bring thousands of white South Africans to the U.S. as refugees. The program has provoked backlash from the South African government and refugee groups.

Trump froze refugee admissions from around the world after taking office in January but weeks later launched an effort to bring in European-descended Afrikaners from majority-Black South Africa. Trump has said these people were victims of race-based violence and discrimination, claims the South African government strongly denies.

On Wednesday, South African authorities said they would deport Kenyans who were contracted to work on the U.S. refugee program, saying they were using improper visas.

Refugees in the past have received materials explaining U.S. history and culture, but they do not normally promote specific presidents or ideologies, three veteran refugee workers said.

The Trump biography recounts his childhood in New York City and successes and failures as a businessman, including the bankruptcy of his lavish Taj Mahal casino and hotel in Atlantic City.

The book includes prominent moments from Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency, from construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to efforts to combat COVID-19.

In a chapter entitled “Challenges and Controversies,” it broaches Trump’s two impeachments by the U.S. House of Representatives, including his message to supporters to “fight like hell” before they stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“The events of January 6 and the subsequent impeachment trial were among the most contentious moments of Donald’s presidency, sparking debates about accountability, free speech, and the future of American democracy,” it reads.

The book is published by EverNest Press, whose only online presence Reuters could find was on Amazon, with no available contact information. EverNest Press is also listed as the author. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cooper also proposed the welcome packet include “The 1776 Report,” published in January 2021 as Trump ended his first term in office. The report, the product of a presidential commission convened by Trump, criticizes policies that promote diversity.

The HHS official also recommended including a report on religious freedom by the Family Research Council, a conservative group. That report highlights legal battles by American business people who refused to serve same-sex couples, including a Colorado baker who won a case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018.

Kenya’s environment court to consider a claim that a lux safari camp was harming wildebeests routes

Kenya’s environment court to consider a claim that a lux safari camp was harming wildebeests routes 150 150 admin

NAROK, Kenya (AP) — Kenya’s environment court said Thursday it will consider a case challenging the operations of a luxury safari camp in the Maasai Mara reserve amid claims it was infringing on the annual wildebeest migration corridor.

The decision came after a local conservationist, who had initially filed the suit, moved to withdraw it. The court dismissed the motion for withdrawal said it would take up the case again on Feb. 10 and decide how to proceed.

The case was filed in August following local and international condemnation over claims the location of the Ritz-Carlton Maasai Mara Camp was blocking the annual wildebeest migration, which draws thousands of tourists from around the world.

The luxury camp, operated by Marriott International, is expected to be among Kenya’s most expensive destinations, charging guests up to $3,500 per night.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is home to several other luxury camps that provide tourists with an opportunity to be up close with wildebeests during their annual migration to the neighboring Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Judge Lucy Gacheru of the Environment and Land Court said that although the law allows a petitioner to withdraw a case, it is at the judiciary’s discretion whether the case should be thrown out and that, in this instance, the serious environmental impact issues raised were of significant public interest.

The Kenyan conservationist, Joel Meitamei Olol Dapash, filed the withdrawal motion on Wednesday, stating that his concerns had been addressed after consultation with the parties involved.

However, the project developers, Lazizi Mara Limited, asked the court to reject the withdrawal, stating that despite their compliance with all regulatory and statutory requirements, the developer had been portrayed negatively and should be allowed a fair hearing in a court of law.
