July 6 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Monday that Walmart would lower prices on many products, including ground beef, after a request from his administration.
The retailer said customers would save on items including meat, produce and soda at its Walmart and Sam’s Club stores this summer.
Record-high beef prices have strained the wallets of U.S. consumers who also paid much higher gasoline prices after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February.
Prices for steaks and hamburger meat soared after a persistent drought burned pasture lands and hiked costs of cattle feed, forcing U.S. ranchers to slash their herds. Economists have said it will take years to rebuild the herd to expand domestic beef supplies.
Trump said Walmart will drop prices on a pound of ground beef by “almost” 15% after his administration made a request to coincide with the nation’s 250th birthday.
“This is a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Walmart said in a statement that the price of one pound of 73% ground beef roll would drop to $5.94 from $6.74 in its stores, a decline of about 12%. The retailer also said it lowered prices on items including Coca-Cola and PepsiCo sodas and chips.
At Sam’s Club stores, Member’s Mark 88/12 ground beef will be priced at $5.97 per pound, instead of $6.17, a 3% decline, according to the statement.
“Walmart is stepping up in a big and bold way, and other Retailers should follow the lead of these absolute Patriots,” Trump said.
Trump previously encouraged low-tariff imports of Argentine beef to cool U.S. prices, angering American ranchers, and directed the Department of Justice to investigate whether U.S. meatpackers were colluding to raise prices.
U.S. beef producers formerly imported Mexican cattle to fatten and slaughter for American consumers, but Washington blocked such imports more than a year ago because of the spread of the flesh-eating New World screwworm parasite in Mexico.

WARSAW, July 6 (Reuters) – Britain, the Netherlands, Finland and Poland are making “significant progress” on the new Multilateral Defence Mechanism and aim to establish it by 2027, the countries said in a joint statement on Monday.
Defence financing is set to be a key topic at this week’s NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. The MDM is one of several competing initiatives aimed at channelling more private cash into rearming nations.
“We have benefited from the support of a broader group of allies in developing the technical details of this model,” the four nations said in their statement.
They said they would work to expand the coalition of nations involved in the project and would move on to the next phase of developing the mechanism with countries that have declared their participation in autumn.
Another key project in the increasingly crowded field of defence financing initiatives is the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank.
Canada is aiming to announce around 10 founding nations for the DSRB at the NATO summit. The Polish finance ministry did not immediately respond to an emailed question about whether it was in talks to join the DSRB.
Britain has ruled out participation in the DSRB, opting to pursue the MDM project instead.

Macron arrives in Syria as first major western leader to visit war-torn country under new leadership
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron arrived Monday in Syria, making him the first major western leader to visit the war-torn country since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited in April but Macron is the first leader from western Europe or North America to do so.
The French president’s visit comes during a period of relative calm in the Middle East after the monthlong war in Iran and Lebanon. He will travel next to Ankara, Turkey, for the NATO summit, where Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa is also expected to attend and hold a high-profile meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Syria’s state-run SANA news agency said Macron would visit with a business delegation to discuss regional security as well as business and investment opportunities.
The French president was greeted at Damascus airport by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani.
“I have come to express France’s commitment to the Syrian people. For a sovereign Syria, united in its diversity and at peace with its neighbors,” Macron said in a post on X. “Together, let us open a new chapter of stability and peace.”
France supports all those who can “contribute to build a new Syria” in line with the aspirations expressed since the 2011 Arab Spring, Macron’s office said, referring to a period of widespread uprisings across the Middle East that called for political change and reform.
Macron will meet with al-Sharaa at the presidential palace and “engage directly with diverse Syrian people,” his office said.
The French president’s meetings are scheduled throughout Tuesday, beginning with members of Syrian civil society, his office said, though no details were disclosed. Macron will then meet with al-Sharaa, before holding economic talks and signing memorandums of understanding. The two leaders will hold a joint news conference afterward.
Macron hosted al-Sharaa in Paris in May 2025, where he urged European and U.S. leaders to lift longstanding sanctions on Damascus. Most of those sanctions had since been lifted.
Paris supported Syria’s new leadership even at a time where others were skeptical of al-Sharaa’s Islamist-led rule and former role as the head of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militant group, previously linked to al-Qaida.
Western governments were especially concerned about the treatment and inclusion of women and minorities, and whether Syria’s new government would transition into a more democratic rule.
Syria has managed to sidestep the region’s recent conflicts, but the country is still battered from 13 years of war that left much of it in ruins, drove millions into poverty, and will cost hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild. While Syria has signed memorandums of understanding with states and large companies for large investment projects, they have not yet come to fruition.

EVERETT, July 6 (Reuters) – Boeing plans to begin operating a fourth 737 MAX assembly line on Monday at its Everett, Washington, factory.
The new line, known inside Boeing as the North Line, is part of the U.S. planemaker’s long-term plans to significantly increase output of its popular single-aisle jetliner to keep up with historically high global demand for jets.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said in June the company would “load” the first aircraft onto the Everett line on July 6. He described the line as a copy of the three 737 final assembly lines in Boeing’s Renton plant, south of Seattle.
The start comes as Boeing ramps 737 production from 42 to 47 jets a month after consulting with the Federal Aviation Administration. The North Line is not expected to contribute to any rate increases before early 2027, when Boeing aims to increase 737 output to 52 jets a month.
The company is studying increasing the 737 production rate to as much as 70 jets per month.
Boeing needs to increase 737 output to help regain its financial footing after years of production disruptions, safety crises and supplier strains.
The FAA imposed limits on Boeing’s 737 production after a January 2024 midair blowout of a door plug on a nearly new Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. The incident intensified scrutiny of Boeing’s manufacturing controls and forced the company to slow output while it addressed quality lapses.
The Everett plant is the world’s largest building by volume. It once housed production lines for the 747, 767, 777 and 787, but it has considerable available factory space after the end of 747 production and the consolidation of 787 assembly in South Carolina.
The 737 MAX competes with Airbus’ A320neo family in the high-volume single-aisle market, where airlines are waiting years for new aircraft.
