Brazil reaches deals with airlines to settle tax obligations

Brazil reaches deals with airlines to settle tax obligations 150 150 admin

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil’s government said on Friday it has reached deals with two of the country’s largest airlines, Gol and Azul, to settle some pending tax obligations totaling 7.5 billion reais ($1.22 billion).

The government has provided the carriers with significant discounts and allowed them to make installment payments.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

The deal may provide financial relief to the companies. Latin American airlines have been facing financial hurdles in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and were forced to restructure obligations as they struggle with high debt loads.

Gol has been under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. since early 2024, while Azul recently struck deals with lessors to scrap obligations in exchange for an equity stake and bondholders to obtain fresh financing.

BY THE NUMBERS

Gol will pay 880 million reais in up to 120 installments to settle obligations of about 5 billion reais, the government said in a statement, adding that it would also retain 49 million reais from the firm currently deposited in a judicial account.

Azul, meanwhile, will pay 36 million reais immediately and an additional 1.1 billion reais in up to 120 installments to settle more than 2.5 billion reais in debt.

KEY QUOTES

Mariana Vieira, an official in the office of Brazil’s solicitor general, said the deals were a “significant step towards settling tax issues aggravated by the pandemic, and contribute to the resumption of growth in the industry.”

Gol in a separate statement said the deal resolves tax liabilities and would not impact its net financial debt.

MARKET REACTION

Sao Paulo-traded shares of Gol were up 1.5% on Friday, adding to gains of more than 5% in the previous session, when the company provided a glimpse of the tax deal in a securities filing.

Azul shares were up 0.8%, following a rise of 2.8% on Thursday.

US surgeon general urges cancer warnings for alcoholic drinks

US surgeon general urges cancer warnings for alcoholic drinks 150 150 admin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – -Alcoholic drinks should carry a label warning consumers about their cancer risks, the U.S. Surgeon General said in an advisory on Friday, noting that their consumption increases the risk of developing breast, colon, liver and other cancers.

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy also called for the guidelines on alcohol consumption limits to be reassessed so that people can weigh the cancer risk when deciding whether or how much to drink, alongside current warnings on birth defects and impairments when operating machinery.

Shares of U.S.-listed alcoholic beverage makers fell between 1% and 2% in premarket trading, with Brown-Forman Corp leading the declines.

“Alcohol consumption is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after tobacco and obesity, increasing risk for at least seven types of cancer,” Murthy’s office said in a statement accompanying the new report.

It is responsible for 100,000 U.S. cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths each year, more than the 13,500 alcohol-associated traffic crash deaths, it added.

In the U.S., there are about 20,000 alcohol-related cancer deaths annually, according to the report.

Alcoholic beverages in the United States currently carry a health warning label that advises pregnant women to not drink them and that their consumption impairs a person’s ability to drive a car or operate machinery.

This label has not changed since its inception in 1988.

“The direct link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk is well-established for at least seven types of cancer … regardless of the type of alcohol (e.g., beer, wine, and spirits) that is consumed,” the statement said, including cancers of the esophagus, mouth, throat and voice box.

The new report recommends health care providers should encourage alcohol screening and treatment referrals as needed, and efforts to increase general awareness should be expanded.

Investigators meet in Brazil to extract data from black box of crashed Azerbaijani airliner

Investigators meet in Brazil to extract data from black box of crashed Azerbaijani airliner 150 150 admin

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Several of Brazilian air force investigators are working with colleagues from three other nations to analyze data from the Azerbaijani airliner that crashed in Kazakhstan on Dec. 25, killing 38 people. Azerbaijan claims the jet was unintentionally shot down by Russia.

The Embraer 190 aircraft, made in Brazil, was en route from the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, to Grozny in the North Caucasus when it was diverted. It crashed while trying to land near the city of Aktau after flying hundreds of kilometers (miles) east across the Caspian Sea.

Brazil’s air force said in a statement late Thursday that nine foreign investigators have gathered with its own experts at its center for investigation and prevention of air accidents in capital Brasilia to work on data extracted from the airplane’s black box and other tools. Kazakhstan has three investigators in that group, while six others come from Azerbaijan and Russia.

Investigators in Brasilia are working on recordings, cockpit voice and flight data recorders of the aircraft, the Brazilian air force added. There’s no deadline for investigators to publicize their conclusions, which will ultimately come from Kazakh authorities.

“The extraction, obtention and validation of the data of the flight recorders will take place in the shortest possible time,” Brazil’s air force said.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said that that the aircraft was hit by fire from the ground over Russia and was rendered uncontrollable by electronic warfare. He accused Russia of trying to “hush up” the issue for several days.

Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to his counterpart for what he called a “tragic incident”, but stopped short of acknowledging that Moscow was responsible.

Putin’s apology to President Ilham Aliyev came as allegations mounted that the plane had been shot down by Russian air defense systems attempting to fend off a Ukrainian drone strike near Grozny, the regional capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, where the plane was heading.

Biden to block U.S. Steel sale to Japanese buyer, Washington Post reports

Biden to block U.S. Steel sale to Japanese buyer, Washington Post reports 150 150 admin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden has decided to officially block Nippon Steel’s proposed purchase of U.S. Steel, the Washington Post reported, citing two administration officials who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) had previously referred the decision to approve or block the deal to Biden, who will leave office on Jan. 20.

Biden’s call to block the deal was taken despite contrary efforts by some of his senior advisers over concerns that it could damage U.S.- Japan relations, the report said.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on the report. A source told Reuters a decision by Biden was expected as soon as Friday. A spokesperson for Nippon Steel declined to comment on the report.

U.S. Steel directed Reuters to a statement shared earlier on Thursday that said it hoped “Biden will do the right thing and adhere to the law by approving a transaction that so clearly enhances U.S. national and economic security.”

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Virginia’s state legislative special elections

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Virginia’s state legislative special elections 150 150 admin

WASHINGTON (AP) — Voters in Virginia will begin the new year filling state Senate and House vacancies on Tuesday in a trio of special elections that could determine control of the narrowly divided chambers.

In the Washington suburbs of Loudoun County, Democratic state Sen. Suhas Subramanyam’s election to Congress in November has triggered a special election for his seat in state Senate District 32, as well as in state House District 26, where the Democratic incumbent resigned after winning the nomination to fill the state Senate vacancy.

The nominees to replace Subramanyam are Democratic state Del. Kannan Srinivasan and Republican Tumay Harding. Running to replace Srinivasan in the House of Delegates are Democrat JJ Singh and Republican Ram Venkatachalam.

In state Senate District 10 to the west of Richmond, voters will elect a replacement for Republican state Sen. John McGuire, who was elected to Congress. In August, McGuire defeated U.S. Rep. Bob Goode in the Republican primary in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. The nominees are Republican Luther Cifers and Democrat Jack Trammell.

The state Senate and House seats in Loudoun County are both reliably Democratic. Former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe carried the overlapping districts with more than 60% of the vote in his failed 2021 reelection bid. In presidential elections, President Joe Biden carried Loudoun County with about 62% of the vote in 2020, while Vice President Kamala Harris received about 57% of the vote in 2024. Meanwhile, voters in state Senate District 10 preferred Republicans Donald Trump and Gov. Glenn Youngkin in previous elections. McGuire ran unopposed for this seat in 2023.

Democrats hold slim majorities in both the state Senate and state House of Delegates. Assuming Republicans hold McGuire’s Senate seat, Democratic losses in either Loudoun County seat could throw control of the state Senate to Republicans or force a power-sharing agreement in the state House of Delegates, where Democrats had reclaimed control after the 2023 elections.

The AP does not make projections and will declare a winner only when it’s determined there is no scenario that would allow the trailing candidates to close the gap. If a race has not been called, the AP will continue to cover any newsworthy developments, such as candidate concessions or declarations of victory. In doing so, the AP will make clear that it has not yet declared a winner and explain why.

Here’s a look at what to expect on Tuesday:

Virginia’s state legislative special elections will be held Tuesday. Polls close at 7 p.m. ET.

The Associated Press will provide vote results and declare winners in three contests in state Senate Districts 10 and 32 and state House District 26.

Voters registered in state Senate Districts 10 and 32 and state House District 26 may participate in the special election in their district.

As of November, there were about 177,000 registered voters in Senate District 10, 155,000 in Senate District 32 and 58,000 in House District 26. Voters in Virginia do not register by party.

In the last state legislative elections in 2023, turnout was 38% of registered voters in Senate District 10, 42% in Senate District 32 and 40% in House District 26.

In the 2024 presidential election, the AP first reported results at 7:11 p.m. ET, or 11 minutes after polls closed. The election night tabulation ended at 3:56 a.m. ET with about 95% of total votes counted.

As of Tuesday, there will be 301 days until Virginia’s general elections for governor and state House of Delegates.

It’s Christmas for the elephants as unsold trees are fed to the animals at Berlin Zoo

It’s Christmas for the elephants as unsold trees are fed to the animals at Berlin Zoo 150 150 admin

BERLIN (AP) — For the elephants and others at the Berlin Zoo, it’s finally time to unwrap their Christmas presents.

Trees that didn’t find a home this festive season were given to some of the animals on Friday in what has become an annual event. Elephants tore off branches with their trunks, lobbing them around their enclosure or eating the greenery.

The zoo takes only fresh, unsold trees from select vendors. It doesn’t accept trees from the public, which could contain chemicals or leftover decorations.

“They don’t just serve as food, they are also used to keep the animals occupied,” said Florian Sicks, the zoo’s curator for mammals.

“The animals can fight with them, they can rub themselves against them, they can throw themselves over them and do various other things with these fir trees,” he added. “And so we enrich the animals’ everyday lives, which they are very happy about.”

While the elephants eat up much of the tree, other animals take a more cautious approach.

This year, the giraffes got the belated stocking-fillers for the first time — suspended upside down at the height of their heads. Max enjoyed more than a taste of the greenery, but companion Mugambi appeared unconvinced after inspecting it.
